Ladies – 5 reasons to invest in a menstrual cup!

Menstrual cups – if you have been reading my blog regularly, you were probably wondering at what point it would come to this.  Well yes I will admit, I am a big fan.  Some time ago I bought a mooncup and I have never really looked back since then.  So here are my five reasons as to why I think it is worth investing in a menstrual cup:
  1. Using a menstrual cup is cheaper than the alternatives.  A  mooncup will set you back around £20 (inc p&p if you order it online).  I found I was spending around £40 a year on sanitary towels.  The  Mooncup  is meant to last for years and will definitely save you money over time.
  2. Menstrual cups are more environmentally friendly than their alternatives.  No more overflowing bathroom bins!
  3. They are really comfortable – well I find that to be the case anyway.  I never liked tampons, but am very happy to wear a mooncup
  4. They can be left in for up to 8 hours and can be worn overnight.
  5. They help you to keep your period private – once it is in, you don’t need to carry anything extra around with you during the course of your period and as there is no waste you leave nothing behind.
Top tips when making the change:
  • Take a look at the mooncup  website.  It goes into a lot of details and answers most of the questions you are likely to have.
  • To start off with I found that it took a bit of getting used to.  I read somewhere (perhaps on the Mooncup site) to take your time getting used to it and that there is no rush – that really helped.  It didn’t take long before I felt fully comfortable using it and I’m so glad I stuck with it.
  • Check the toilet afterwards – I don’t know if it just me, but I have found it often benefits from a quick swipe with a toilet brush.
  • Make sure you get the right size – there are two size of Mooncup to choose from depending upon your age and whether you have had children or not.
There are a variety of menstrual cups available on the market, so it is worth shopping around
first and doing your research.  I haven’t tried any other versions, but I think the mooncup it is a great product well worth investing in. It was defnitely the right choice for me to buy a mooncup and although it may take a little time to get used to, you will be so glad you did!
UPDATE: As of November 2016 I have been using my Mooncup for over 5 years! I’ve saved myself a couple of hundred pounds over that time, I’ve found it really convenient and I rarely have to empty the bathroom bin!
