<h2 class="wp-block-heading">How can you make your own chimney balloon for free?</h2>

<p>Introducing guest post number three from my husband. </p><div class="ecoth-content" style="margin-bottom: 30px;margin-left: auto;margin-right: auto;text-align: center;" id="ecoth-1753963832"><a href="https://ecothriftylearning.thinkific.com/courses/cut-the-wrap" aria-label="Sustainable gift wrap course"><img src="https://ecothriftyliving.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/12/Sustainable-gift-wrap-course-ad-2.png" alt="Sustainable gift wrap course"  srcset="https://ecothriftyliving.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/12/Sustainable-gift-wrap-course-ad-2.png 1080w, https://ecothriftyliving.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/12/Sustainable-gift-wrap-course-ad-2-300x300.png 300w, https://ecothriftyliving.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/12/Sustainable-gift-wrap-course-ad-2-1024x1024.png 1024w, https://ecothriftyliving.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/12/Sustainable-gift-wrap-course-ad-2-150x150.png 150w, https://ecothriftyliving.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/12/Sustainable-gift-wrap-course-ad-2-768x768.png 768w, https://ecothriftyliving.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/12/Sustainable-gift-wrap-course-ad-2-500x500.png 500w, https://ecothriftyliving.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/12/Sustainable-gift-wrap-course-ad-2-60x60.png 60w, https://ecothriftyliving.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/12/Sustainable-gift-wrap-course-ad-2-980x980.png 980w, https://ecothriftyliving.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/12/Sustainable-gift-wrap-course-ad-2-700x700.png 700w" sizes="(max-width: 1080px) 100vw, 1080px" class="no-lazyload" width="300" height="300"  style="display: inline-block;" /></a></div>

<p>It&#8217;s getting colder outside and we have had the heating on already. I&#8217;m on a mission to use technology and gadgets to reduce energy usage and save money. So when I could feel a cold draft in our family room it didn&#8217;t take long to track down the source of it &#8211; our chimney. </p>

<p><em>Please note this article contains affiliate links marked with an asterisk. If you click through and buy something, it won’t cost you anything extra, but it will help to support the blog – thanks!</em></p>

<p></p>

<p>We decided a while ago that our gas fire was not very efficient and we haven&#8217;t used it in ages. The decision not to use it at all was sealed when we needed to get a gas safety certificate. The gas man said we needed new fake coals or we could just cap the gas. We went with capping the gas. &nbsp; </p>

<p>When our kids are older I&#8217;d like a wood burner but until then our chimney is just a source of wasted heat. So I started looking into what was available. I came across <a rel="noreferrer nofollow noopener" aria-label="chimney sheep (opens in a new tab)" href="https://amzn.to/3g3iSKR" target="_blank">chimney sheep</a>* &amp; a <a rel="noreferrer nofollow noopener" aria-label="chimney balloon (opens in a new tab)" href="https://amzn.to/3gdftt4" target="_blank">chimney balloon</a>* which you can buy, put in your chimney and blow up. When you want to use the fire you just deflate it. You can reuse it many times over so quite thrifty already. This made me wonder if I needed to buy it or if I could make my own. </p>

<p>I then saw a <a rel="noreferrer noopener" href="http://diyenvironmentalideas.blogspot.co.uk/2009/01/diy-chimney-baloon.html" target="_blank">post</a>&nbsp;where someone used a black bag and some loft insulation. I picked up some bags of loft insulation from freecycle so that seemed like a good and free solution. This project took me less than an hour and has saved us money, as well as making the room more comfortable. </p>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading">I used the following to make the chimney balloon: </h2>

<ul class="wp-block-list"><li>2x thick black bin bags</li><li>Old loft insulation (fiberglass)</li><li>Strip of material or string</li><li>Piece of plastic pipe</li><li>Safety glasses</li><li>Gloves </li></ul>

<figure class="wp-block-image size-large"><img fetchpriority="high" decoding="async" width="640" height="320" src="https://ecothriftyliving.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/01/chimney-balloon.jpg" alt="make DIY chimney balloon" class="wp-image-4343" srcset="https://ecothriftyliving.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/01/chimney-balloon.jpg 640w, https://ecothriftyliving.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/01/chimney-balloon-300x150.jpg 300w, https://ecothriftyliving.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/01/chimney-balloon-600x300.jpg 600w, https://ecothriftyliving.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/01/chimney-balloon-400x200.jpg 400w" sizes="(max-width: 640px) 100vw, 640px" /></figure>

<p>It was a bit of trial and error with how much insulation to put in. I put in loads initially and then couldn&#8217;t push it through the opening of the fireplace. &nbsp; The idea is to put the bag far enough up the chimney that you can&#8217;t see it. Leave just the end of the material hanging down to be able to pull it down when you need to. </p>

<p>I double bagged the insulation as the inside of the chimney is quite rough. The missus was worried about ventilation and it is important there is some air flow in the chimney. This stops condensation causing problems so I found a castoff of some plastic piping.&nbsp; </p>

<p>I put that up the chimney first and then squeezed the insulation as small as possible to get it into the hole and then let it expand into the chimney stack leaving the pipe to provide a small amount of ventilation. There is still some airflow but is no longer a big draft. A job well done! It was quick and didn&#8217;t cost us a penny. </p>

<p>Warning: &nbsp;Do not do this if you have a working fireplace. A&nbsp;chimney balloon&nbsp;designed for the task would be much safer and they are not expensive. </p>

<a href="https://3.bp.blogspot.com/-btd9KOCx75w/UNGtjc1eq5I/AAAAAAAABBQ/pZp-wClsZsE/s1600/P1040858.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img decoding="async" border="0" height="480" src="https://ecothriftyliving.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/01/P1040858.jpg" width="640"></a></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
A couple of weeks ago someone I have only met once gave me these two scooters with two new handle and wheel sets for free. &nbsp;I then gave them to my children who absolutely love them! &nbsp;The person who gave them to me no longer had a need for them and very kindly made the offer to give them away for free via&nbsp;<a href="http://www.freecycle.org/" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">Freecycle</a>. &nbsp;This is the first time I have used Freecycle and I think it is brilliant!</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;"></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
I have subscribed to my local &nbsp;Freecycle and&nbsp;<a href="http://ilovefreegle.org/" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">Freegle</a>&nbsp;newsletters and receive regular updates on things that are &#8216;wanted&#8217; and on &#8216;offer&#8217; as well as those that have been &#8216;taken&#8217;. &nbsp;To reply to an offer, you can either reply by email or go through the website. &nbsp;It pays to be quick off the mark though, as often items go really quickly. &nbsp;</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;"></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Common items which get posted on the sites include tv&#8217;s, fridge freezers, beds, wardrobes, packing boxes and video tapes. &nbsp;Specialist items also appear on the sites occasionally and recently on one of the sites someone was giving away some snails!</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;"></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
There are so many ways to make use of these sites:</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;"></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;"></div>
<ul>
<li>You can give things away that you might have otherwise thrown away</li>
<li>You could look out for items that would make great gifts &#8211; start now and you might not need to buy any gifts for Chanukah or Christmas next year!</li>
<li>Playgroups, schools and nurseries could save themselves money by requesting toys, books and craft supplies through these sites.</li>
<li>If you would like to try out a new hobby &#8211; rather than rushing out and spending loads of money, you could see if anyone if offering the relevant equipment, or put out a wanted ad! &nbsp;If the hobby isn&#8217;t for you then it doesn&#8217;t cost anything to offer it to others for free through these sites.</li>
</ul>
<div>
The opportunities for saving money, reducing landfill waste and creating goodwill are endless and I have to admit I am a big fan of both Freegle and Freecycle!</div>
<div></div>
<div>
What are your Freegle/ Freecycle stories? &nbsp;What have you given away and what was the best thing you received? &nbsp;I would love to hear your stories!</div>
<div></div>
<div>
If you liked this post I would really appreciate it if you click like on&nbsp;<a href="http://www.facebook.com/EcoThriftyLiving" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">Facebook</a>&nbsp;and follow on&nbsp;<a href="http://twitter.com/#%21/ecothrifty" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">Twitter</a>. Also if you have a Kindle it would really make my day if you&nbsp;<a href="http://www.amazon.co.uk/Eco-Thrifty-Living/dp/B006XV32VE" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="">subscribe</a>&nbsp;to this blog on it! &#8211; Thanks!</div>
