Yesterday I got up really early to go to London to find out about ecoATM UK (known as Gazelle at the time, but now rebranded to ecoATM) – a phone recycling company. Phone recycling isn’t a new idea in this country. However ecoATM is changing the game! They are bringing their phone recycling kiosks over from the US where they have been in business for 10 years, to the UK. These machines are designed to make it easy and convenient to recycle our phones.

They are really simple to use and are very clever. You take your old phone along, put it in the machine and it 3D scans it and then gives you a quote for how much the phone is worth. You don’t have to sell it at this point and can take it back out if you have second thoughts about it. If you do want to sell it though, you continue through the process and can either choose to get paid by PayPal or direct to your bank account. It takes under 10 minutes to go through the whole process.

You can take any phone in any condition to be recycled. I took along a very old broken phone with no battery in it to try in their demo machine they were showing and got offered a £1 for it. I think that is much better than having to find another way to recycle it and way better than it going in the bin! I might have been able to get more for it if I had been able to turn it on as they would have been able to see that it worked. They recommend turning phones on before putting it in the machine so that they can offer the best price for it.

They say that phones are either sold on, refurbished to be sold on or are recycled and that nothing goes to landfill. They work with companies that recycle every part of the phones. The refurbished phones are sold on in various ways including to developing countries.

They really care about the environment and want as little waste as possible. On their website it says they have diverted 19 million cell phones and tablets from landfill and that in those devices they have saved 670,206 pounds of copper, 1425 pounds of gold and 14668 pounds of silver for reuse! (They aren’t accepting tablets in the UK at the moment, but do in the US).

I did notice that before you put your phone in to be scanned they print out a sticker that you need to put on the back of your phone. However there is a little slot to put the plastic from the back of the sticker in the machine and they recycle it where possible depending on the location of the machine.

I wanted to know how they make sure they are competitive and give good prices for phones. They said that they update the prices daily and are constantly checking market value. They said you might get quoted slightly more for recycling through a website. However the online quote is often a rough guide until they have seen your phone and it might not be the final price you get offered. You won’t have that problem at an ecoATM uk kiosk as they will pay out straight away. I can’t say for sure if the prices are competitive, but I think their key selling point will be that they make it so easy.

The kiosks are being put in really easily accessible places like shopping centres and supermarket foyers. Currently they are mainly in the midlands in Morrisons supermarkets, but they have plans to expand all over the UK within the next couple of years.

Before I went yesterday my husband told me to ask them about fraud. Well they answered that question with bells on. So if you are thinking that this is the start of a great career as a phone thief, I would think again.

You have to be over 18 to use the machines and you have to take your driving license with you. You put your driving license into the machine and the kiosk films you and someone in ecoATM UK checks via the camera that you are who you say you are. If the phone has been reported as lost or stolen, then the phone will not be returned and they will have your picture on camera.

If you are worried about data on the phones, firstly you should wipe them before selling them, but if you forget ecoATM UK say they will only work with companies that data wipe the phones before doing anything else with them.

A lot of people don’t recycle their phones because although there are lots of companies offering phone recycling services, you have to go out of your way to find a website, fill out all the details and send it off. On top of that if the phone is very old or broken, you would probably think you wouldn’t get much for it. This means there are lots of phones going to landfill and sitting around unused in our homes. Phones are full of toxic materials and we really don’t want them going to landfill. Recycling them or selling them on is the best option when you have finished with them. I think these ecoATM machines might be changing the story for old phones in the UK in the near future!

Final word about ecoATM UK, after the meeting they sent us home with goody bags and I know these people care about the environment, because of their attention to detail in the bag! From the bag itself to the 3 things that were in it. A bamboo coffee cup, a wood coated USB stick and a wood coated portable battery charger. Yes there was a little bit of plastic, but overall I think they tried really hard to avoid it and I was really impressed!

I’m looking forward to them coming down South so that I can get recycling – got just a few phones to sell as you can see from the picture at the top!

UPDATE to this post:

ecoATM have recently done a survey of Brits and ‘found that, while almost all of us (83% and a whopping 90% of women), are trying to do more than ever to cut our plastic, and recycle more, less than a fifth (19%) of us feel that we know what can and cannot be recycled.

What’s more, over half (57%) still throw away their laptops or mobile phones (and just a third of us have recycled them) leaching dangerous chemicals into the environment.’

So it sounds like it isn’t that we don’t want to do the right thing, we just aren’t sure what it is!

I spent a good few hours sorting out and decluttering our stationery recently. That is ridiculous on so many levels but just sorting out stationery threw up lots of issues for me.

Why is it ridiculous? Well mainly because first of all we don’t have that much of it and second of all why did I need to spend more than 5 seconds thinking about whether to keep something like a sharpener or not?

I decided to sort out our box of stationery because it was overflowing and it was becoming difficult to get the box in and out of the cupboard and to find the things we need. I also hardly ever (if at all) used a lot of the things in it. My aim was to cut down the stationery in our home so that we only actually have the things we need, not the things we don’t use. I wanted to get rid of everything that didn’t fit that aim, but I didn’t want to throw anything in the bin.

The problems I faced were:

Wondering if my kids will need some of it in a couple of years? I have kept stuff from my school days and having kept the things this long, isn’t it a bit silly to get rid of them now?

Some of them were arts and crafty type things that may come in useful at some point, but I think I have used them once or twice at most.

Some I didn’t want, but they weren’t in good condition e.g. a whole load of old rubbers/ erasers. How could I get rid of them without chucking them in the bin?

Some looked great because they hadn’t been used, but they didn’t compare to older more sturdy less attractive versions e.g. some really old manky looking sharpeners which sharpened much better than the newer looking plastic ones.

The opinions of other people. They weren’t there in the room with me, but I could almost hear a certain family member telling me to hold on to stuff I don’t use often in case I needed it and my husband wondering why on earth I was considering getting rid of both our staplers.

What to do with the unwanted stuff?

After picking up a few items and thinking far too much about each one, I decided I was going about it the wrong way. I decided instead to make a pile of the things we need and use regularly now and then work out how to get rid of everything else.

This worked really well for me and I soon had a bag filled with stuff I didn’t want. I also decided to only put out one pen, one pencil etc in easy access rather than a whole load of them and only add to it if I needed to.That was great, but I then had to work out what to do with the bag of unwanted stuff. I had a chat with my husband about it as I didn’t want to get rid of stuff that he might use or need, but I also didn’t want to go through the stuff piece by piece (I just stopped myself from doing that and I had spent far too long on this already).

Between us we had two ideas:

I asked him to tell me what he thought we needed in our stationery box and if he mentioned anything I had got rid of I would have put it back.

He suggested that I put anything I think we might need in a box out of the way for a set time and then get rid of it if we haven’t used it by then.

In reality just having the conversation was useful as he confirmed that yes he does use the staplers (not for stapling bits of paper – he used them to fix my flip flops when the strap fell off and to provide a temporary fix for a hole in a bag) and he didn’t mention anything else I was planning to get rid of.

So the next job was to find a way to get rid of the stuff that needed to go without chucking it in the bin. I considered giving it all to my kids school, but was worried they would think I was dumping my rubbish on them (especially as I keep turning up with bags of stuff after school e.g. old uniform, toys, games, books and fabric). I consulted with a very helpful Facebook Group – Zero Waste Heroes over the rubbers and the discussion prompted a blog post on the Zero Waste Week blog about what to do with old rubbers (read more here). The only suggestion that really worked for me though was to give them to the kids school. I decided there is no harm in offering and the school doesn’t have to take it if they don’t want it!

Although my stationery decluttering experience was fairly frustrating and took way too long, I learned from it and a few days later I managed to clear a whole load of stuff in my bedroom that had been piled up to sort through much quicker than I would have done because I didn’t sit and agonise over each thing. I also gave myself a time limit of dealing with it within 1 hour which helped. My decluttering adventures are no-where near over yet though and I’m sure I will be writing about them again soon!

This final one focuses on dealing with your unwanted stuff like the punctured deflated football pictured here with minimal negative impact upon the environment and maximum positive impact upon your finances.

I don’t know what your personal situation is, maybe you have been through a full scale declutter or maybe you are just getting rid of a one off item, however whatever the situation, it is worth taking a little time to think about how to dispose of your unwanted things.

Each item you no longer want will have a different type of value. Some may have sentimental value, some will have none. Some will be well used or even broken and some may be almost brand new. Most items are unlikely to fetch anywhere near enough to buy a new version of something similar, but the odd item may fetch more than a newer version would cost e.g. an antique.

You have a variety of options open to you as to what you could do with your stuff, but before you take up any of those options, consider which option will allow you to realise the worth of the item as far as possible.

Ok the options are:

Mend it! – a quick google will tell you how to mend most items if you don’t already know how and it can really prolong the useful life of your item.

Use it up! – if at one point you loved basmati rice, but have now decided Thai fragrant rice is the way to go, use up the basmati rice first!

Give it away! – this isn’t as simple as it sounds. There are various options when you are giving something away.

Sell it! There has been a massive rise in popularity in sites like Ebay and Amazon, but local sites and notice boards are just as good an option and may be easier in cases where the item is of small value but needs collecting.

You could give it directly (i.e. give it to someone who will use it) or indirectly to charity (i.e. give it to someone who will sell it and use the money). You could also give it to someone via a site such as Freecyle or Freegle.

You could give it to a friend or relative and tell them you no longer need it – this is beneficial as it promotes giving and sharing amongst friends.

You could give it to a friend or relative as a gift for their birthday or festive event – in this situation you have saved yourself and the environment the cost of buying something new.

Upcycle it! It may not be practical to continuously upcycle the centre of every toilet roll that comes into your house, however one off items such as an old and much loved t-shirt (could be turned into a cushion cover or stretched over a frame and made into wall art for example) or a broken mug (great for mosaic projects) may be prime candidates for upcycling.

Swap it! A while ago my friend gave me a whole load of her old clothes and I gave her a whole load of mine, we had gained/ lost weight in opposite directions and it worked out perfectly for us. Neither of us lost anything in monetary value and we both felt we had gained.

Recycle it! Even if your local council doesn’t recycle it, there may be an independent site nearby that does – worth having a look around.
If there are no other options – landfill/ dispose of it safely! This particularly applies to items that could be dangerous such as plastic bags (supermarkets will take them), drugs (take them to your pharmacist) and batteries for example (again supermarkets will take them).

You may find that you can gain more value from something by upcycling, swapping or giving it as a gift than selling it. In these cases for example you could make a donation to charity and may still be better off than if you gave the item directly to charity to sell. You may also find that something you would usually put in the bin such as a punctured football could be mended or upcycled! It is definitely worth taking the time to think about what you will do with your stuff before getting rid of it.

Last week I listed seven good reasons to declutter, however there are lots of excuses that can hold us back from decluttering. These things can slow us down and make us feel like it is the most difficult task in the world:

Decluttering can take a long time – sometimes due to the volume of things to get rid of and sometimes due to indecisiveness over what to get rid of.

Sometimes it is hard to let go of things for sentimental reasons

Sometimes it is hard to let go of things because you may worry about needing them down the line

It can seem wasteful to get rid of things.

We may feel a failure when the room or area we were trying to declutter looks worse than it did before – this is especially the case if you take everything out of a cupboard and can’t work out where things should go.

A few days, weeks, months after our decluttering exercise everywhere is a mess again and you may as well not have done it.

If you feel this way about decluttering there are things which can help:

I have mentioned before on my blog that I am a big fan of hypnotherapy and in particular this hypnosis CD – Become Tidy and Organized has helped me on my path to greater organisation.

The Simplify Guy (a blogger I know) has daily ideas for decluttering your life and has a great meditation on decluttering called subtraction an exercise

Start small and continue small – just do a drawer, shelf, small cupboard, surface at a time. Take breaks between each section you do. Eventually all your cupboards and drawers and surfaces will be working better

Pay attention to the clutter problems you have on a regular basis and put a plan in place to deal with them. It may be that things don’t have a proper home e.g. you have toys or paperwork all over the place, or that you are bringing more things into your home on a regular basis than you have space for e.g. waste items that are waiting for the recycling.

Once you have identified that you don’t need something in it’s current form any more, don’t be in a hurry to throw it out. Take some time to consider the options available to you.

Clearing out the clutter can have a multitude of benefits for yourself and your family and is well worth taking some time over. Aside from the obvious ones such as making a few pennies selling items off, or having a clearer, potentially more relaxing space to live in, there are other less immediately obvious options which open up to you by decluttering.

1. House swapping – when I started this blog I signed up to a house swapping website as I really like the idea of being able to go away at peak times of year (i.e. school holidays) and not having to pay a penny for accommodation. Having a clutter free home makes your home more attractive to other house swappers and gives you comfort that things are in good working order and are easy to reach and find in your cupboards when you are not there. This may help to reduce the likelihood of potential breakages / injuries.

2. Rent out your garage – depending upon the location of your garage you may find that you could make a bit of money renting it out. If your garage is full of stuff though, that isn’t really an option. Our garage is full of stuff, but I couldn’t tell you off the top of my head what most of the things are which are in it. This tells me pretty quickly that I never use it and if I never use it, why am I storing it? There are a few items in there which are used regularly, but it would be cheaper to build a garden shed to store those things and I could potentially make an income renting out my garage.

3. Get in a lodger – if you have a room that is full up of junk or even a room that isn’t, but is only used rarely, by decluttering those spaces you could free up room for a lodger! In this instance the clutter may not be entirely obvious, for example a dining room which is only used twice a year may not seem like it is full of clutter, but actually clutter is something taking up space which you don’t really need and the dining room furniture is not really needed if you only use it twice a year!

4. Stay in your home – you may feel that you don’t have enough room in your current home and need to move house purely to accommodate all the stuff you have accumulated. By going through your stuff and getting rid of everything that you haven’t used in the last year, you may find that actually you don’t need to move house at all! If you are really set on moving house though, decluttering will help to sell your home as others may feel the place isn’t big enough if they see excess stuff everywhere.

5. Set up a business from home – instead of getting a lodger in after clearing out a room not usually used much, you could use a spare room in your house to run a business. This could be anything from providing hairdressing services to selling items online.

6. Make your home a safer place – I have gradually been going down the route of chemical free living and so far have decluttered my cleaning cupboard and my bathroom cupboard, swapping harsh chemical laden products for more natural, safer alternatives. Great for everyone, especially if you have children.

7. Keep up to date – now I’m not fussed about having the latest phone or tv or fridge freezer, however the fact is that things change all the time, not just in relation to technology, but also in relation to fashion, our interests and increased knowledge about the risks and benefits of things we would never have considered in the past. Sometimes it is just time for a change and hanging on to too many things or things that are totally out of date can sometimes be a false economy and can keep you stuck in the past. My mother kept lots of things from when I was a baby (I’m now 33). Some of those things were useful when I had my children, but some of those things really should never be used again (e.g. a decrepid plastic beaker and a sick stained quilt!).

What experiences have you had of decluttering and what effect did it have on your life? I would love to hear your stories!
