quit your job

Welcome to Eco Thrifty Living, a blog about teaching you how to save money and the environment. My name is Zoë and I’m so excited to have you here and to help you on your journey.

Does this describe you?

You know that it’s time for a change and that you want to do things differently to how you’ve done them before. Perhaps you want to

  • quit your job (or take time out) to be a stay at home parent or carer
  • retrain and go into a different field of work
  • set up your own business and become an entrepreneur.
  • take time out from the working world to recover from an illness, or to just rethink your direction in life
  • or you just want to spend less in some areas of your life, so that you have more to spend or save for other areas.

You are also concerned about the environment. The news reports about climate change, plastic in our oceans, air pollution and more upset you and you want to change the story. Instead of feeling powerless to make a difference, you want to start focussing on solutions and positive action.

You can no longer carry on with the current status quo. It isn’t fulfilling you and you feel like you have to make this change. You have motivation, determination and grit on your side. You will change your life and have a positive impact on the environment.

But you have worries and are asking yourself questions like:

  • How can I afford to do that?
  • What will the people around me say?
  • Will I regret it or fail?
  • What if I am succesful?
  • What are the steps to success?
  • Where do I start?

All the questions you are asking yourself at this point boil down to two main questions:

  1. Can I get over my fears and objections to changing?
  2. How can I do it?

If this describes you, then you have come to the right place and I can help you!

Why am I the right person to help you?

I’ve been where you are

Back in 2011, I was on maternity leave with my second child and I didn’t want to go back to work.

I wanted to become a stay at home mum. This was a pretty dramatic decision as I had a career as an Internal Auditor. Plus, I had recently taken professional qualifications and completed a Masters in Audit Management and Consultancy.

I faced obstacles

There was a recession going on and I was earning a good salary. It didn’t seem like a sensible time to quit. But I found juggling home life, work life and a long commute was too much for me and I decided being at home for my two little boys was my number one priority. I would have to find another way.

When I told my husband that I wanted to quit my job and be a stay at home mum, he said to me:

‘We have just moved to a bigger house and had another child. Plus you like spending extra on expensive eco-friendly and organic products. How can we afford to go from two salaries to one, when our expenses have gone up and you are buying these costly products?

I’ve always believed that where there is a will there is a way and I was really inspired by my husband’s questions. I began repeatedly asking myself – how can we spend less in eco-friendly ways? Around that time I discovered blogging and decided to start up this blog to document my journey. It was a childhood dream of mine to be a writer and become an author and it was my first step on my path towards that goal.

I quit my job and followed my eco dreams!

I turned my internal auditing skills in on myself, by looking at everything we spent money on. Then I asked myself if there was a less expensive more eco-friendly way to do it. We also started making small amounts of money through side hustles and a year later I quit my job. It was one of the most satisfying experiences of my life! Fast forward to May 2019 and I published my first book – Eco Thrifty Living, Save Money, Save the Environment and Live the life you want. Another incredible moment in my life – I had achieved a childhood dream!

How can I help you spend less and become more eco friendly?
