Make an inexpensive gift for Mothers Day

Mothers Day is about showing you care and that does’t have to involve spending a lot of money.

Sustainable gift wrap course

This is a really easy and inexpensive gift to give your mum this Mother’s Day. This is far from a disposable gifts and can bring her happiness year after year!

It might not look much now, but once the daffodils come up it will look lovely!

Things you will need:

  • A basket. I bought one very cheaply from a charity shop
  • A charity collection bag. They come through the door all the time but if you don’t have one, a large plastic bag will work.
  • A pair of scissors
  • A couple of handfuls of stones
  • Soil
  • A few daffodil bulbs
  • A few handfuls of dried leaves. You can use bark chippings or stones if you don’t have any leaves.
  • Ribbon

How to make up the basket:

  1. Fold the charity bag up so that it fits into your basket.
  2. Put your stones in the bottom of the basket.
  3. Trim the edges of the charity bag so that fits nicely in the basket.
  4. Place your daffodils on the stones.
  5. Fill the remaining space with soil.
  6. Chop up your dried leaves .I had saved some large leaves from a plant I no longer wanted and left them to dry out in my garage a while ago.
  7. Sprinkle liberally over the top of the soil
  8. Tie a pretty ribbon over your daffodil basket!  If you don’t have any ribbon, you could use string.  You could also make your own by chopping strips of unwanted fabric or even strips of plastic packaging can make a nice ribbon!

If you want to make it look really professional you could wrap it up in cellophane and then tie it up with a ribbon.  Surprisingly cellophane (if you buy real cellophane) is actually biodegradable as it is made from plant material.  I keep meaning to get some, but haven’t found a supplier which states the cellophane is actually biodegradable yet.   I have a few issues with gifts as I have listed in my many blog posts on the subject, but I like this one as it reuses unwanted materials and having plants indoors helps to purify the air inside your home!

If you would like to make a daffodil card to go with this gift, I have a how to here.

  1. How sweet! I love living gifts and items that can be reused 🙂

Thanks so much for sharing this on Waste Not Want Not Wednesday, I’ve pinned it.

  2. Love this idea. So … do the daffodils grow right in the basket once one starts watering it? What a clever idea!

  3. Zoe

Thanks Small Footprints – yes the idea is the daffodils grow in the basket. I was given a basket of daffodils as a present once and this was inspired by that!
