Give the gift of daffodils this spring!

The daffodils are looking great at this time of year! As you walk out the house on your way to a friend’s for lunch or to family for dinner, it doesn’t take long to pick a bunch and take them as a gift.

A little extra time and you can present them in an attractive and beautifully simple up-cycled glass jar.

We have a whole border in our garden filled with daffodils . They are easy to grow and just seem to multiply each year. Although after a few years, they may need digging up and the bulbs separating, they are very low maintenance most of the time.

To make the vase you will need the following:

  • A tall thin glass jar
  • A piece of coloured green card large enough to wrap around the jar
  • Double sided sticky tape
  • White ribbon or fabric scraps
  • A pair of scissors
  • A pair of gardening shears or kitchen scissors

Method:

1.Cut the card so that it slightly longer than needed to wrap around the glass jar.  Stick some double sided sticky tape at one end

2. Peel off the sticky tape, wrap the card around the jar making sure it is as tight as possible and press the sticky end down onto the non-sticky end of the card.

 3.  If you have some white ribbon to hand then great, but if you don’t fabric scraps work just as well – I had these left over from another craft project.  I chopped them up into long straight lines and then tied two of them together as they weren’t quite long enough.

4. Then tie the ribbon or scraps around the jar, lacing through some chopped bits of fabric into the knot if it is too short to tie into a bow.

5.  Pick the daffodils and, tie up with an elastic band just under the flower heads.

6. Chop off the ends at an angle to make them all the same length using gardening shears or kitchen scissors

7. Wrap the bottom of the stems in wet kitchen paper or a small piece of fabric and carefully put the flowers in the jar, being careful to not drip on the cardboard.

I found this little project very satisfying. It reused a glass jar saving it from recycling. It used daffodils that had already been planted in my garden from previous years and looked lovely too!

If you would like to give daffodil bulbs as a gift here is how you can make a basket that will last for years.

What do you think?  I’d love to hear your comments.

  1. I love this idea, so much prettier than my daffodil display! Thank you so much for sharing this with us on Natural Mothers Network's Seasonal Celebration and best wishes for a very Happy Easter!
